Instead of digging through deeply nested folders, it provides a clean, chronological view of your photos, mirroring a modern smartphone experience.
However, many users only scratch the surface of this feature. To truly supercharge your workflow, master these five hidden tips for the File Explorer Gallery. 1. Build a Multi-Folder Collection
By default, the Gallery only displays images from your standard Pictures folder. If you keep photos in custom project directories, external drives, or network folders, you can aggregate them all into a single feed. Open Gallery from the left sidebar. Click the Collection dropdown menu on the top command bar. Select Manage collection. Click Add to include any folder on your PC. 2. Scrub Through Time via the Scroll Timeline
If you have thousands of images, scrolling down endlessly to find an older file is highly inefficient. Look closely at the far right edge of the Gallery window to find a hidden timeline navigation bar.
Hover your mouse over the right-most edge of the Gallery view. A vertical timeline showing years and months will appear.
Click and drag the timeline slider to jump instantly to a specific date. 3. Sync Your Smartphone Wirelessly via OneDrive
You do not need to manually plug in your phone to see your latest camera shots in the desktop Gallery. You can automate the process by linking your phone’s camera roll directly to Windows. Open the OneDrive app on your iOS or Android device. Turn on Camera Upload in the app settings. Ensure OneDrive is running on your Windows PC.
Your mobile photos will automatically stream directly into your File Explorer Gallery feed. 4. Enable the Secret Photo Selection Checkboxes
When you want to batch-delete or move dozens of specific images out of the Gallery, holding down the Ctrl key while clicking is tedious and risky—one wrong click can deselect everything. Turning on hidden checkboxes provides a much safer alternative. Click the View menu at the top of File Explorer. Hover over the Show submenu. Click Item check boxes.
Now, floating checkboxes will appear on the top-left corner of every image thumbnail when you hover over them. 5. Pair the Gallery with the Details Pane
The Gallery is highly visual, but it frequently lacks immediate context regarding file sizes, dimensions, or shooting dates. Instead of opening a photo or right-clicking to view properties, activate the side Details Pane for instant data.
Press the keyboard shortcut Alt + Shift + P (or click View > Show > Details pane). Click on any image within your Gallery feed.
A right-hand sidebar will instantly display the image dimensions, camera model, file size, and creation date without slowing down your navigation.
